Having played over 500 different games, it takes something special to earn the tag unique. Polarity is truly unique as it uses the concept of magnetism and magnetic fields to drive the game play.

Polarity is played on a light canvas mat and the playing surface includes nothing more than a circle (45cms in diameter) with a dot in the centre. Each player is given 26 discs roughly the same size as a Backgammon or Othello piece. Each disc has two sides, one black and the other white to depict the two sides and each disc contains a magnet.

Each player starts the game with 5 discs that are laid flat anywhere on the surface. A red disc is flipped before play begins and whichever side it lands on will set the initial magnetic field (to North or South).

The aim is now quite simple. On a player's turn they must aim to add a new disc to the mat. The trick is they cannot lay a piece flat on the surface. Instead they must use the magnetic field in play to make one of their discs lean at an angle. These discs are called 'Leaners' and in time the playing area will be covered with them.

With each new disc that is added, the magnetic field will change. The trick is to feel that field as you prepare to place each disc. It is really fascinating to hold a disc in your hand and feel the magnetic pull and to watch how other discs are influenced by the disc you are holding.

The longer term strategy is to force your opponent into an error, called a 'Fault'. A fault occurs if a player causes other discs to react on their turn. If this happens it can allow the opponent to form a Tower, which is worth points. Towers are a series of discs stacked on top of each other. Towers also have a major impact on the magnetic field and in this way the game continues to evolve.

Polarity really is an intriguing game that has the potential to appeal to almost anyone. Children have a fascination with magnetism, making it a great family game. Science in a board game…perhaps it's a case of opposites attract?!
